CANADIAN BRANCH JUNIOR MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

The Canadian Branch Junior Men’s Championship is often referred to as the DOUG WASHER. This competition is open to all Junior men under the age of 20 as of the 1st of July of the current curling season and all players must be members of the same curling club. It is normally played on a Saturday and Sunday and is a four event Bonspiel (A-B-C-D).

DOUG WASHER TROPHY

The Doug Washer Trophy was first competed for in the 1978 - 1979 curling season. It was donated by the Canadian Branch of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club to honour Doug Washer who for many years was very actively involved in Canadian Branch activities.

Pointe Claire's Jon Spring rink won the 'A' final of the Branch Doug Washer Junior Men's competition, this past weekend (February 21 and 22). The team consists of Jon Spring, Greg Stanton, Riley Schmalhaus, Bernard Piché and Dan McDonough.

The event finals included twelve teams. Matches were hosted at the Danville and Windsor Curling Clubs. Team Spring earned two key wins to earn their berth to the final. The final match was played against St. Lambert. These teams have played each other many times over the past four years. Their games have always been close. The final was no exception. It was a hard fought back and forth match, with Team Spring coming out the victor 6-4.

Player position flexibility has been a key component for Team Spring this year. This flexibility was tested by their coach, Rick Stanton, as a challenge to the team. Players were shuffled around to play different positions for each match. In particular, each game had a different player as skip. It's nice to know they can win an event, even without a "standard" lineup.

Tradition usually has the winning team bringing the trophy to their home club for display. For this year, to preserve historical information, the Branch has decided to retain all trophies to have them updated with past victors, whose missing names are not on the trophies. It is hoped that PCCC will get the Doug Washer Trophy to put on display at some point, prior to next year's competition.

Congratulations boys!
