Pointe Claire - Glenmore Teen Mixed combination win Vic Prest Trophy

March 14th and 15th saw the Branch Teen Mixed event being hosted by the Ormstown and Huntingdon Curling Clubs. Sixteen teams registered for the Bonspiel. Pointe Claire's Jon Spring and Greg Stanton teamed up with Meaghan Hamelin and Lisa Davies from the Glenmore Curling Club. Meaghan played lead, Jon threw second, Lisa skipped and threw third, with Greg throwing fourth rocks. The kids made it to the 'A' semifinals, but lost a tough game 6-5, to the eventual event winners fron Carelton Heights. The Carleton Heights skip was forced to play a raise-takeout on her last rock for the win.

In the 'A' Consolation game, Team Davies played against Pointe Claire's Pat Cawley, Jeff Herskovits and Sam Davis (Ottawa) and Brittany Connel (Longue Pointe). The Hamelin,Spring, Stanton, Davies combination proved convincing victors, in winning the Vic Prest Trophy.

The Quebec Provincial Junior Curling Circuit has just finished its regular season. The circuit is designed to provide a competitive environment for provincial junior curlers, as part of Curling Quebec's Excellence Development Plan. There are four divisions with registered teams: U16 Girls (12 teams), U16 Boys (17 teams), U21 Girls (11 teams) and U21 Boys (15 teams). The top four teams at the end of the season compete in divisional playdowns, where divisional winners and finalists receive cash prizes.

The U21 Boys' division held 9 events this year. Events were played in the Quebec, Sag/Lac and Montreal regions. . In their second full season on the U21 circuit, PCCC's Team Spring, playing in 7 events, has finished in 3rd place!. Job well done! Congratulations to Jon Spring, Greg Stanton, Riley Schmalhaus, Bernard Piche and Dan McDonough. Hats off to Team Cawley (Patrick Cawley, Jeff Herskovits, Kelso Mallette and Philippe Despaties), representing Pointe Claire/Longue-Pointe, finishing the season in 5th place.

Pointe Claire teams secured two of the three Montreal-area spots at the upcoming Junior Provincial Curling Championships, which will take place from January 3 to 9, 2009 at the Chicoutimi Curling Club.

The Cawley team (which played as Team Herskovits last year) went 3-0 at Regionals and claimed the Montreal 1 spot. The team is made up of Patrick Cawley, Jeff Herskovits, Kelso Mallette and Philippe L.Depatie, with Matt Kennerknecht as fifth player. They are coached by Alan Smith. The Spring team had a much more difficult journey in order to secure the Montreal 3 spot, playing five games over the two weekends. The team consists of Jonathan Spring, Greg Stanton, Bernard Piché and Riley Schmalhaus, with Daniel McDonough as fifth man. They are coached by Rick Stanton.

Both teams are now preparing to get to the championships right after the holidays. With the cost of van rentals, hotel accommodations for up to eight nights and food, they are looking at costs of $2,500 to $3,000 per team and are busy rounding up whatever support that they can get.

Results will posted online and members are encouraged to follow our teams by checking the event web site at: http://www.curling-quebec.com/junior/

On the girls side, our 15 and Under team of Liane Lefebvre, Amanda Hamilton, Katrina McGovern and Carolyn Chin made it to the semi-finals before being eliminated. They now turn their focus to the Jeux du Québec regional playdowns this coming weekend at Glenmore. The girls are coached by Guy Hamilton.

The District 1 LCA Championship in the Juvenile division was held at Whitlock in November and Team Lefebvre from PCCC was victorious. They played in a 2 game total points competition and defeated the Baie d'Urfé team on both occasions. They have now qualified for the LCA Championship which will be played at the Cornwall Curling Club at the end of January. The team is coached by Guy Hamilton. Pointe Claire Curling Club was well represented at this past weekend's (Nov 14-16) Quebec Junior Curling Circuit event. The CPCJ bonspiel was hosted by the Longue Pointe Curling Club and featured 10 Junior Boys' teams and 4 Junior Girls' teams. Pool matches were played on Friday and Saturday. The top 6 boys' teams and top 2 girls' teams advanced to Sunday's quarterfinals.

The team of Jon Spring (lead & skip), Bernard Piché (2nd rocks), Riley Schmalhaus (3rd rocks), Greg Stanton (4th rocks & vice-skip) and Dan McDonough (alternate) were 2 and 1, finishing first in their pool. The team of Jeff Herskovitz (Vice), Pat Cawley (Skip), Kelso Mallette (2nd) and Philippe Despaties (lead) went 1 and 2 in their pool. With four teams at 1 and 2, their shootout score helped advance them to the quarterfinals.

The two teams met in the event final. It was a tight game, as the teams blanked the 1st, 2nd and 7th ends. Team Spring, playing with 3 players, tied the game in the 6th, at 3 – 3. In the 8th, Team Herskovitz, with last rock advantage, were able to clear a partially covered rock, with their last stone for the win.

With their 1st and 2nd place showings, the two teams have moved up in the circuit rankings. Team Spring is in 1st place overall, with Team Herskovitz right behind, in 2nd place.

Next circuit event is November 28-30, at the Rosemere Curling Club.

The Victoria and Etchemin Curling Clubs hosted the next leg of the Provincial Junior Curling Circuit, from Nov 7-11. Pointe Claire's Team Spring, consisting of Jon Spring (lead & skip), Bernard Piché (2nd rocks), Riley Schmalhaus (3rd rocks), Greg Stanton (4th rocks & vice-skip) and Dan McDonough (alternate) were eager participants. This was Dan McDonough's first event with the team. With Riley having to return to Montreal late Saturday, Dan's presence was important to ensure 4 players were available for every game.

Team Spring went 2 and 1, finishing 2nd in their pool. The pool loss was in extra ends, to the eventual event winner from the Jacques Cartier CC (Quebec City). Their semi-final loss required the skip from Kénogami (up 1 with hammer) to throw his last rock against two. Team Spring defeated Montreal-West in the consolation final to capture 3rd for the circuit event. Team Spring has now moved from 7th place to 4th place overall, on the circuit rankings.

Curling in MRC l'Assomption

March 2nd to 6th

January 20

Our Juniors continue their winning ways.

From January 26th to 28th, the Montreal West Curling Club hosted its annual Leprechaun Junior Bonspiel, with teams entered in three categories: 15 and Under division, 20 and Under division and the Provincial Junior Curling Circuit Elite Division.
Pointe Claire entered two teams in the 20 and Under Division and one team in the Provincial Junior Curling Circuit Elite Division. All thrre teams excelled at this event.

The Greg Stanton team, with third Jonathan Spring, second Evan Brown and lead Bernard Piché, won their second 20 and Under event in as many attempts (although they still qualify to play at the 15 and Under age group). They defeated the other Pointe Claire team of Daniel McDonough in the final by a score of 5 to 3. Daniel's team consisted of third Riley Schmalhaus, second Marc Philion and lead Daniel Philion. This follows on the heels of their Christmas Tim Caverly Branch win and their winning of the Regional Jeux du Québec competition.

Stanton Team - 20 and Under Division Winners

In the Provincial Junior Curling Circuit Elite Division, which included the top 18 Junior Men's and Women's team in the province, the Jeff Herskovits rink, with third Patrick Cawley, second Robert Philion and lead Kelso Mallette was the event winner. They defeated teams from Longue-Pointe, Montreal West (twice), Riverfield, Mont Bruno and Trois-Rivières to earn their first circuit event win. This catapulted them from 8th to 5th place (out of 24 teams) on the circuit. What was special about this event is that it was the only event on the circuit to use the "Skins Game" format.

Though the event featured some serious curling, all attempts are made by the organizer Kevin Alladin to include certain "fun" elements, such as a "Hot Shots" competition and the fact that each team had to choose a movie and were expected to dress as characters from the movie that they had selected. That is why you will notice in the photos that in fact it was the "Snakes on a Plane" team of Greg Stanton that defeated the "Bon Cop Bad Cop" team of Daniel McDonough.

Also, perhaps it was a little magic that helped the "Harry Potter" team of Jeff Herskovits win their first provincial circuit event.

The next event for these three teams will be "Le Milieu", to be held February 9th to 11th at Glenmore.

Gold Medal Winners

Photo: Keith Mallette

We've just had the Jeux du Québec Regional playdowns to select the Lac St-Louis representatives for the upcoming games in the MRC L'Assomption. All players must be 15 years old or younger. The playdowns occurred over the last two weeks at the Lachine Curling Club.

We had entered two boys teams and one girls team. In all there were six boys teams and three girls teams.

Our girls team of skip Liane Lefebvre, third Amanda Hamilton, second Katrina McGovern and lead Carolyn Chin played their first games together as a competitive team. Unfortunately, they came up against more experienced opposition and had to settle for the Bronze Medal.

On the boys side, we had the Stanton rink (Greg Stanton, Jonathan Spring, Evan Brown and Bernard Piché, with coach Rick Stanton) , fresh from their Championship run at the Christmas Tim Caverly Branch event and a newly formed five-man team skipped by Rory Mallette with third Sean Gazdewich, second Sebastian Lamoureux, leads Charlie Lapin and Jeremiah Lee. These boys finished the preliminary round with one win and one loss and unfortunately, this left them out of the playoffs.

The Stanton team however, ran their unbeaten streak to eleven games in a row and beat the South rink from Glenmore to win the right to represent the region early March.

This photo shows them with their Gold Medals.

We wish them all the best of luck in L'Assomption.

Juniors win the Tim Caverly

This is the Greg Stanton team, who won the 20 and Under Division of the Christmas Tim Caverly Branch Event.

This team of 15 and Under players decided to play up one age group and ended up winning the whole thing. They will be competing this weekend (Jan. 13) in the Jeux du Québec Regional Playdowns, which is a 15 and Under event, so their chances are good.

In the photo, with event organizer Kevin Alladin are: skip Greg Stanton, lead Bernard Piché, second Evan Brown and third Jonathan Spring. Coach Rick Stanton is in the background. (The same trophy was won two years ago by the Jeff Herskovits team.)

Game results:

The Jeff Herskovits rink (with third Patrick Cawley, second Robert Philion and lead Kelso Mallette) won the third and final Montreal spot at the Curling Québec PERFORMANCE Junior (Under 21) Championships to be held January 3 - 9, 2007 in Baie Comeau. Accompanying them will be coach Keith Mallette and fifth Greg Stanton.

On December 19th, they defeated the Greg Stanton rink, also of Pointe Claire, 11 - 2, at the Lachine Curling Club to claim the spot. In all, three PCCC teams were entered in the Montreal Regional Playdowns. The Matthew Kennerknecht rink (with third Michael Kennerknecht, second Marc Philion, lead Sean Fraser and fifth Daniel Philion) battled illness and scheduling conflicts and did not progress pass the fourth round and the Greg Stanton rink (with third Jonathan Spring, second Evan Brown, lead Riley Schmalhaus and fifth Bernard Piché) provided the opposition the decider. This team of Juvenile-age (15 and Under) players managed to bring their game together over the two weekends of play, winning four of their seven matches to get them to the "C" Final. Watch out for these guys at the upcoming playdowns to represent the Lac St-Louis region at the Jeux du Québec.

As mentioned above, the Herskovits team met after last night's game to decide on a fifth player and invited Greg Stanton, who gladly accepted. The focus now is to work out the logistics of getting the team to Baie Comeau in early January, arranging hotel rooms and other on-site requirements as well as getting in some practice time over the holidays. All three PCCC teams are participating in the Branch Tim Caverly Bonspiel.

In all, fourteen very strong teams competed for these spots, the other two going to the Racine rink from Lachine and the Pollack rink from Montreal West. This represents the second year in a row that the Herskovits rink has won one of the three spots assigned to Montreal. Last year, at the Etchemin Curling Club, in Lévis, they won the Bronze Medal.

The Herskovits rink won the Dr. Vic Prest Trophy at the Branch Doug Washer Junior Men's competition, the finals of which were held this past weekend (December 2nd & 3rd) in Lacolle and Bedford.

The Montreal-area District 2 playdowns were held November 11 to 13 in Otterburn Park and the Greg Stanton and Jeff Herskovits teams won two of the six allocated spots in the 16 team finals. Greg's team consisting of third Jonathan Spring, second Evan Brown, lead Riley Schmalhaus and fifth Bernard Piché had to win two of three games in the playdowns and then went 1 and 2 in the finals.

Jeff's team with third Patrick Cawley, second Robert Philion and lead Kelso Mallette were fast-tracked through the preliminary stage, needing only one key win and then went 3 and 1 in the finals to win the Dr. Vic Prest Trophy.
